The John Buck Company Annual Volunteer Day - August 26, 2008

A huge THANK YOU is extended to the 40 JBC volunteers and our contractor partners in completing a comprehensive renovation of Casa Romero.  Our collective work will help Casa Romero fulfill its mission to help nurture neighborhood children in a safe environment.

Casa Romero, located at 4600 S. Honroe in The Back of the Yards neighborhood, is one of the many social services provided by Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish overseen by Fr. Bruce Wellems.  Casa Romero is an after-school program serving 275 neighborhood children weekly from ages 6-18.  The program offers academic assistance along with mentoring and general life guidance.  In addition, Kid's Cafe, located in the basement serves hot meals to 150 children daily.

We were fortunate again this year to have tremendous support from our partner contractors.  We would like to recognize the following companies' efforts:

ABM Janitorial Services - complete cleaning including waxing
Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council - transportation services
Best Built Fabricating Company - misc metals including replacement of gates and handrails
Chicago Christian Industrial League - landscaping
Executive Construction Inc. - doors, banisters, drywall, flooring
Flooring Resources Corporation - new carpet on stairwell
Gatto's Restaurant - lunch
Gibson Electric and Technology Solutions - interior/exterior lighting and electrical upgrades
Great Lakes Plumbing and Fire Protection - replacement of toilets, sinks and piping
Tiffiny Decorating Company - paint supplies and labor
Trainor Glass Company - new window

In addition to our contractor work, the JBC team of volunteers was able to paint 10 rooms and a stairwell, install 15 bushes and trees, hang a new sign, demo tub and replace flooring, clean and wax removal, install 40 new blinds and a refrigerator,  and provide 10 tables, 5 desks and 10 bookcases, and general clean up and repair.

A special thanks to Bob Billick for his tireless dedication.  Bob was again instrumental to the success and coordination of Volunteer Day 2008.  In addition, thank you to Kevin Alcaro, Julie Chamlin, Dawn Dolan, Candice Elwell, Jim Gorczyca, Sue Jurgeto, and Mi'Chelle DeNye for their team leadership and behind the scenes work.
